Leeds is a city of garden contradictions. Inside the ring road you have walled Victorian terraces, generous Edwardian villas and tight urban plots. Out in Roundhay, Adel, Alwoodley and Headingley you have larger suburban gardens, mature trees and rich planting territory. Bramhope, Adel and Cookridge add proper plot sizes and old hedgerows. Each pocket of Leeds is its own garden brief.

Designing for Leeds gardens

Soil. Most of Leeds sits on heavy clay. Garden soil here is unforgiving until it has been worked, and standard developer turf rarely makes it past the second winter. We assess soil at the first site visit and design around what we find, rather than fighting it.

Microclimate. Central Leeds is an urban heat island. Plants we would not normally recommend for North Yorkshire often thrive in inner suburbs. The east of the city is colder and wetter than the west. Suburbs at the edge of the moor (Otley Road north, Yeadon) need different palettes again.

Areas we cover. Roundhay, Headingley, Adel, Alwoodley, Bramhope, Cookridge, Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Horsforth, Moortown, Wetherby Road suburbs, plus inner-city walled gardens and rear-of-terrace plots.

Leeds garden design FAQs

Where in Leeds do you work?

Across the whole of Leeds and the surrounding suburbs. Roundhay, Headingley, Adel, Alwoodley, Bramhope, Cookridge, Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Horsforth, Moortown, plus inner-city plots.

How long does it take to design a Leeds garden?

A Silver design typically takes four to six weeks from first consultation to handover. A Gold design with 3D walkthroughs takes six to ten weeks. Larger commercial or school projects take longer.

Do you charge travel from Harrogate to Leeds?

For design work, no. The fee covers site visits across Yorkshire as standard. For project oversight on Leeds builds we charge hourly door to door.

Can you handle a Leeds Victorian terrace garden?

Yes. Walled rear gardens are some of our favourite briefs. Limited light, awkward access, history in the walls, but properly designed they can be extraordinary.
