Knaresborough is the kind of town where the gardens have to work harder than the houses. Sloping plots above the river Nidd. Tight Victorian terraces in the old town with rear gardens that tumble downhill. Modern new-build estates at Manse Farm and Aspin where the soil has been driven over for two years. Each of these is its own brief, and we have worked across all three.

Soil. Knaresborough soil is mostly limestone-influenced clay. Better drained than central Leeds, more demanding than the alluvial soils of the Vale. Often shallow over rock on sloping plots above the river.
Microclimate. Sheltered compared to Ilkley but cooler than central Harrogate. The Nidd valley creates pockets of frost and warmth within metres of each other. Walled town gardens are surprisingly mild. Hilltop new-builds at Manse Farm catch the wind.
