Designing for Ilkley gardens
Soil. Ilkley and the surrounding villages sit on a mix of acidic moorland soils and free-draining alluvial pockets in the Wharfe valley. We probe at the first visit and design for what is actually there.
Microclimate. This is the most exposed part of our service area. Wind, frost pockets, late springs, early autumns. Plants that thrive in sheltered Harrogate gardens often struggle here. We choose for resilience first, beauty second. Done right, that combination is its own aesthetic.

Is Ilkley climate too harsh for ambitious garden design?
No. It is just different. We design with the local microclimate in mind. The garden palette is more disciplined than in sheltered Harrogate suburbs, but the results can be extraordinary.
Can you do moorland-style or naturalistic planting?
Yes. The setting almost demands it. Naturalistic and prairie-influenced palettes work beautifully in Ilkley gardens and we design them often.
How do you handle frost pockets and exposed plots?
By naming them in the design rather than ignoring them. Frost-tolerant species in the cold spots, sheltered planting on the south face, evergreen structure for winter weight.
