The suburbs (Heworth, Acomb, Bishopthorpe, Dringhouses) range from interwar semis to substantial period properties. Beyond the ring road, the villages of the Vale of York offer everything from new-build estates to country plots.
Designing for York gardens
Soil. York sits on the rich alluvial soils of the Vale. Generally workable, often surprisingly heavy in pockets, occasionally waterlogged after winter rain. We test at the first site visit.
Microclimate. Flatter than Harrogate or Ilkley, with hot summers in the city and cold flat winters in the Vale. Less wind-exposed than the moorland fringe. Generally favourable for a wider palette of plants than upland Yorkshire.
